Gold Medal For Billy B's Apple Beer!

In a recent competition involving 48,000 brewers from around the world "RateBeer Best Winter 2006" voted Thorogoods of Burra's Billy B's Golden Malted Apple Beer a Gold Medal ranking 5th best beer in Australia, it was also voted 5th Best Fruit Beer in the World and the rest of the world voted Billy B's as the 2nd best Australian beer, pretty awesome stuff!

It came as a bit of a shock, as at one stage we had stopped making Billy B's all together and it was only demand from outback Queensland that forced us to reconsider. The original idea came from a Yorkshireman, my wife's Dad, Bill Burgoyne (Billy B) I took his ancient recipe and turned it inside out as is my practice with any cider I make.

Billy B's is an apple beer that doesn't pull any punches. For a start it comes in at 12% alcohol and is presented in a 750ml champagne bottle. It is acidic like an early picked Granny Smith, it is very bubbly like a great champagne, slightly sweet and malty, altogether a complex interesting brew. I tell customers to get Billy B's very cold before opening a bottle and then to throw away their car keys.

The truth is that other people are better at describing my apple beers than I am: "Hazy orange with a firm lasting head and the aroma sets the senses dancing. Crisp acidic apples, barnyard, faint caramel, some grapefruit and extraordinary length in the mouth."

Highlandlad "Wow where do I start? Guess by saying that these guys just keep on amazing me with every new cider I try. This one's the best yet. A light amber colour, it pours with a massive champagne-esque head. It has that amazing deep stemmy, fruity, jelly character that all Thorogoods stuff seems to have."
